From Carbon comes a Diamond

Leave it to everybody at Rajeff sports to turn the fly rod world on its head once again.  If you are in the market for a small stream rod, forget all the garbage out there and pick up the Echo Carbon 7′3 2wt.  I put it up against rods four times its price and they have all fallen to the wayside.  Somebody finally created a modern 2 weight that you can actually fish and is not just a ‘toy’.

Working in a fly shop gives you insight into the odd world of fly fishing habits.  One of the mantras of many shops around the country is that small rods just do not sell.  There are all kinds of theories out there as to why this may be:  ”They are toys useless for any real fishing”  ”used for fishing midges”, “They are too light if you hook a bigger fish” etc.  It all boils down to the fact that it seems rods manufacturers have overlooked the 2 weight category for years.  They have been producing taper and feel from ‘classic’ rods, which is fine if you want to be limited, but in the fly fishing world I live in here in the spring creeks of the Driftless Area I find that you are forced to change tactics 3-4 times through the day.  That is where the Carbon 2wt comes in.

This is a rod we honestly, overlooked until recently as we were victims of the 2wt stigma as well.  But, once we picked it up and test casted it in back, to having the cork turn that beautiful dark brown with black specks from fishing it so often, it has impressed at every turn.

Cast delicately to fish sipping trico spinners.  Done with subtlty and accuracy.  Punch small bead head leeches into brush, no problem.  Fish big foam hoppers into a headwind, with a bit of a double haul can do.

Now this is not a rod to fish wide open rivers and cast huge amounts of split shot or expect to bomb out 50 foot casts and beyond.  This is a creek crawler’s scalpel.  Able to dissect small water easily and adapt to and cover changing conditions without fuss.

The Echo Carbon 7′3 2wt is an absolute gem, especially in the overlooked world of 2 weights.  The term workhorse and 2 weight do not usually go hand in hand, but in this case it gets the dirty baseball cap seal of approval.  Head to your nearest dealer and grab one to test out.  You will not be disappointed!

The Carbon is coming, the Carbon is coming

It’s a bit squirrely here in Wisconsin.  A couple of days were the high sans windchill topped out at a balmy 4 below zero.  Cold enough to freeze your eyelids walking to the mailbox.  Finally, too cold to fish.  But memories of fishing the Echo Carbon have been keeping us quite warm this winter…

We have been lucky enough to fish a couple of the Carbon 4 weight rods from late summer until being forced inside by old man winter, and all we can say is WOW!  It handled fishing large streamers for lethargic cutthroat trout on the Elk in B.C., and presented size 24 midge emergers to selective fish right on the spot back here on the Driftless spring creeks.

I put the rod into the hands of many guides, and pro staff members of premium rod companies and each and everyone commented that they thought it should be a $700.00 rod.  They will be in fly shops in the spring.  Cast one, buy one, fish one.  You will be blown away and still pocket enough change to pay next months car payment.  Awesome stuff!

Now if spring would hurry up and get here….

Echo Carp

First time carp fishing on the flats of Lake Michigan for my wife and I, lots of cruising fish, few feeders. This is a smaller one I managed to land.

Fished the Echo 2 9′ 8wt with the D tip and Airflo distance line. That set up shot line out like a rocket, especially for someone used to tiny creeks. To change the fishing mojo, I switched to an Echo Distance rod, and that is when we found the fish.

The view from a different angle

Although not pro staff (I am only a peddler/fanatic of Echo and Airflo) I have the honor of offering the view of Rajeff Sports from the tiny spring creeks of the Driftless Area.  Spey rods, you can build bridges across our creeks with them.  5 weights,  Smallmouth Bass rods.

No, we are the folks fishing the 3wts and 4wts in the line, the often unheralded sticks in the overall impressive array of Echo rods.  We look for rods that can deliver a fly gently to a rising brook trout, while a few hours later casting a weighted scud into the gnarly depths of a log jam covered hole and be able to finesse the fish out of the wood after being hooked.

This is why we choose to partner up with these guys.  Rods that can handle crawling around on the banks then pop up and put the fly right where we need it without much false casting.  Ones we can put in the hands of our clients, beginners and experts alike, and have them feel like they have fished it forever.  Lines that shoot off the tip like a guided missile, minimizing false casts, while holding up to the muck and cow poo and other nasty things of our area.

But more than a sales pitch, and a heck of a lot more than just another company.  We have found Rajeff sports to be a breath of fresh air in a fairly stagnant fly fishing world.  Innovative, fun, and accessible.  All good things in a company, and in fishing in general.

Keep an eye on this blog, you will see some great things from some great people coming your way!
